How to Celebrate the New Year

In general, people celebrate the new year to welcome the fresh calendar year. The customary new year begins at the end of the month, but it is also celebrated at any time during the year.

Romans gave promises to Janus

Throughout the years, Romans made promises to Janus for the coming year. They offered sacrifices and sacrifices Janus along with gifts exchanged on New Year's Day. They also made resolutions and usually it was a promise of good behaviour during the next year.

According to Roman myth, Janus had two faces one that looked forward and the other that looked backwards towards the previous year. Janus was the protector of bridges, doors and thresholds. His two faces enabled him to see into the future , and also backwards at the same time.

According the myth of the old days, an important task you could take in the days leading up to New Year's Day was to take a vow. This was in essence an offer of goodwill to God for the coming year.

Ancient Egyptians

The celebrations observed in Ancient Egypt did not just a way of increasing the country's wealth and influence, it also elevated individuals to a higher spiritual level. The festivals also highlighted how life cycles are cyclical.

Egyptians counted the year following the solar year consisting of the calendar being 365 days long and having three seasons. Their civil calendar was also partitioned in twelve months of the equivalent of thirty consecutive days. Each month's name was chosen in honor of the major festival that took place during that month. For these events, the government provided food and beverages for the people. Priests sang hymns, served gods and performed rituals to guarantee the gods their goodwill.

Chinese

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the most significant celebration in China. The festival is celebrated for many days, usually between January 21 to February 20 according to the Chinese calendar.

When it comes to Chinese New Year everyone prepares their homes, and they visit relatives. They also eat special foods and perform rituals. These rituals are thought to help rid the home of bad luck and eliminate evil spirits.

The firework display is lit in numerous regions to deter evil. Dancer dances, too, are performed to bring good luck.

It is a celebration of the martyrs' sacrifice, as well as the beginning of a new year. The celebration also remembers the people who made a vow of faith their entire life. The church also celebrates every year the Feast of the Cross, that is observed on the 17th day in the month of March.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the summer, the winter,, and finally the spring. Each season has a specific meaning. The summer time is the time for those Nile River floods. During this time, prayers are recited to ask for the rise to the Nile River waters.

German

Traditionally, the German new year is celebrated on the 31st of December. This is known as the Silvester. This name originates from the fourth century pope Sylvester I. The feast day of Sylvester I is also observed on this date.

In the month of Silvester, Germans make preparations for the coming year. They eat, drink and present gifts that bring luck. They also carry different luck charms.
