How to Celebrate the New Year

The majority of people celebrate the new year to welcome the beginning of a new year. The new year typically is celebrated at the beginning of the month, however it could also be celebrated at any time during the year.

Romans had made promises to Janus

In the past, Romans made promises to Janus to start the new year. They offered sacrifices in honor of Janus and also exchanged gifts around New Year's Day. They also made resolutions which was usually with a promise of good behavior during the next year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces one that looked forward while the other looked backwards into the past year. Janus was the protector of bridges, entrances, and thresholds. His two faces enabled him to gaze into the future , and also backwards at the same time.

According to ancient myth that an important task to complete on New Year's Day was to take a vow. Essentially, this was an offer of goodwill to God for the next year.

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the biggest festival in China. It is celebrated for several days, usually from January 21 through February 20 on the Chinese calendar.

For the Chinese New Year it is customary for people to prepare their homes and spend time with relatives. Also, they eat special dishes and participate in rituals. The rituals are believed to cleanse the home of negative luck and remove evil spirits.

Fireworks are lit across many places to ward off evil. Dragon dances are also performed to attract luck.

In addition, the Chinese New Year also signals the beginning of spring. People send good luck wishes, and pray for a prosperous harvest.

Coptic

Out of all the ancient calendars among the many ancient calendars, among them, the Coptic New Year is among the oldest. It was based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. The calendar also has a distinct spiritual flavour.

This Coptic New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Thout. It is also called the Feast of the Martyrs. It is a celebration of sacrifice of the martyrs and the beginning of the new year. This feast also honors those who were faithful to God throughout their whole lives. The church also reschedules one day, the Feast of the Cross, that is observed on the 17th day of each month.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the summer, winter,, and finally the spring. Each of the seasons has its own significance. In the summer, it is the moment of an event known as the Nile River floods. At this time prayer is recited to pray for the rising and rising of Nile River waters.

German

Traditionally, the German New Year is traditionally celebrated on the 31st of December. The celebration is known as Silvester. The name comes from fourth century pope Sylvester I. The feast day of Sylvester I is also celebrated on this date.

During Silvester, Germans make preparations for the new year. They eat, drink, and exchange gifts of good luck. They also wear various luck charms.

This German New Year celebration is an amalgamation of animistic rituals. Fireworks also form a major part of the celebration. These may be private or government sponsored. They can appear loud and flashy, or delicate and calm. Around the globe, people have used fireworks.
