In general, people celebrate the new year to start a New calendar year. The traditional new year starts at the beginning of the month, however it is also celebrated at any time of the year.

Romans had made promises to Janus

Over the years, Romans made promises to Janus to start the new year. They made sacrifices to Janus or exchanged gift cards on New Year's Day. They also made resolutions that was typically to promise good behavior in the coming year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces The one facing forward at the future and one looking in the backward direction to the previous year. Janus was the protector of bridges, entrances, and thresholds. His two faces let him to see to the future while looking backwards while looking forward.

Ancient Egyptians

Fireworks are lit up in many locations to scare off the evil. Dragon dances are also performed to bring good luck.

In addition, the Chinese New Year also signifies the start of spring. People share good fortune wishes, and pray for a successful harvest.

Coptic

Of all the ancient calendars that exist, it is the Coptic New Year is among the oldest. It is based in the early Egyptian calendar. It also has a special spiritual flavour.

The Coptic New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Thout. It is also called the Feast of the Martyrs. It commemorates sacrifice of the martyrs and the start of a new year. It also honors those who had faith in Christ for their whole life. The church also marks the Feast of the Cross, which is celebrated on the seventeenth day on the calendar.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: summer, the winter, along with the spring. Each season is distinguished by its meaning. The summer season is the moment of those Nile River floods. During this time the prayers are recited to pray for the rise and rising of Nile River waters.

German

The traditional German new year is celebrated on December 31. This is called the Silvester. The name comes from the fourth century pope Sylvester I. The feast day of Sylvester I is also celebrated on this day.

During Silvester, Germans make preparations to welcome the new year. They eat, drink, and also give gifts of luck. They also carry different luck charms.

It is believed that the German New Year celebration is full of animistic rituals. Fireworks are also a huge part of this celebration. They may be privately or government sponsored. They may be loud and sparkling , or subdued and subtle. Everywhere in the world, people are using fireworks.
